The advancements in smartphone technology have changed the way we capture and share information. However, when it comes to journalists and activists operating in challenging environments, the use of smartphones for data collection can pose risks to their safety and the integrity of the information gathered. To address these concerns, we propose a workshop focused on Tella (tella-app.org), a secure mobile application developed to protect users from physical and digital repression. This workshop aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to safely collect and protect sensitive information using Tella. Activities: Have a conversation with participants about the importance of secure data collection and the risks associated with using smartphones in contexts of repression. Introduce Tella as a tool for safeguarding sensitive information on Android and iOS devices. Download, install, and set up Tella on participants' smartphones. Explain how to camouflage Tella and securing their data from unauthorized access. Explain how file encryption works in Tella Showcase the Tella Web server for automatic data collection and the secure deletion of sensitive files. Present real-world use cases of Tella in human rights advocacy and transitional justice efforts. Encourage dialogue and open discussion among participants to address any feedback, ideas, or concerns regarding Tella's functionality and usability. Introduce the new documentation site, which provides user guides and tutorials, and discuss plans for its localization in multiple languages.
